We were due to exhibit at the festival on the 6th, 7th and 8th of July but news broke on Saturday morning that event had been cancelled due to rain, we had a problem. What to do with the 1.2 tonnes of fresh soup that we’d brought to share with Taste of Edinburgh visitors?! We turned to Twitter and issued a plea to help find a local charity.
More than 70 lovely people retweeted our message and Cyrenians FareShare responded.
Cyrenians FareShare is a social enterprise with charity status that distributes food on behalf of producers and retailers to members of the Edinburgh & Lothian communities in need of assistance, and they collected the soup from us on Monday morning.
Our Marketing Manager, Matthew Stephenson, said: “It would have been terrible to see so much fresh food go to waste, so we’re delighted that it has gone to a great cause.
“The last time we exhibited at the Taste festival, we gave out samples to more than 14,000 people, so we obviously had a lot of stock with us. It’s a great shame the event was cancelled because of the poor weather, but at least we’ve been able to make the best of a bad situation.”
Christopher Somerville, manager at Cyrenians FareShare, explained: “We’re always on the lookout for socially minded organisations, and we’re delighted that GLORIOUS! made the effort to help find a good use for their soup. This project is all about a “hand up not a hand out”.
“As you can imagine, suddenly becoming custodian of 1.2 tonnes of soup can have its logistical challenges, but it’s a challenge we’re more than happy to deal with. The soup will be distributed over the coming days to people who need a helping hand in our city.”
BBC Reporting Scotland came to have a chat with us about the soup donation…
Cyrenians distributes around 9 tonnes of quality surplus food per week, which would have otherwise have gone to landfill. We distributed four flavours to Cyrenians FareShare – Chicken & Orzo; Sunny Thai Chicken; New England Butternut Squash; and new Limited Edition, West African Chicken & Peanut – and we’re so happy that we’ve been able to stop unnecessary wastage and help a great cause.
